Meeting Kids:

Monday, September 6, finally we went to meet the students at the school.  They started the class two weeks earlier than the normal school session in August so that they could be prepared to sing songs for us.  We were warmly welcomed by students with songs and waving hands.  They had already learned many songs in two weeks, but the classroom is so poorly equipped because lack of funds, that this was all that they could do, according to the teachers.  Teaching materials were all handmade with whatever was available.  Cardboard used for teaching aids came from the construction rubbish.  Kenyan students normally wear uniforms, but here only a few can afford them, some of them don’t even have shoes or sweaters for cold weather.

Members taught them English songs.  I was impressed with teachers learning those songs so quickly without written words or scores.  The school starts very early morning and they are fed porridge at lunch time.  After lunch they have one class and are dismissed.  The schedule seemed pretty rigorous and ambitious for ages 4 to 6.  The students were extremely well behaved all the time.
