Nathdwara:
A few hours train ride north
from Udaipur, Nathdwara is known for the Shri Nathji Temple, which is dedicated to
Krishna, known also Nath, the favorite incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu.
In the 17th C. a chariot laden with an image of Krishna became stuck in the mud here.
The idol was being carried from Krishna's birthplace Mathura to Udaipur to spare it
almost certain destruction by Aurangzeb; it bearers interpreted the event as a divine
sign and established a new temple where it had stopped.
The temple opens only for certain hours in a day.
Our timing of visiting the town was not so good.
We missed the supposed-be-the-best in Rajasthan hangings
made of hand dyed and woven textile. Still wandering around the downtown
was most interesting.
